Sumon Sir is a Computer Science teacher based out of Kolkata. His love for the subject and keen interest in interacting with his students and helping them achieve their dreams prompted him to take up teaching as his profession. According to him, the motivation behind being a teacher is to share knowledge and in the process learn something new.

What was your area of interest during graduation? How did you go about developing knowledge in this area?
I have my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering. I have also completed M.Tech in the same stream this year.
-
Would you call your style of teaching unique? How important do you think innovation is in education?
In my opinion, a teacher should modify his/her teaching methodologies according to the requirement of the students. The student’s understanding of a subject is of highest priority. If a student finds it hard to understand a particular topic, I try to explain it with certain real life scenarios or some historical event, although I am teaching science or mathematics.

Since failure is a part & parcel of life yet not well handled, what is your advice for young adults on facing failure and criticism and building themselves from scratch?
Failure is the actual way to truly learn something. To succeed in life, the best way is to learn from our mistakes and never repeat them. Failure is the greatest teacher anyone can have if they try to figure out why they failed.

As an inspiration for students, what is the importance you place on pursuing one’s passion? How important is it for children to understand this and parents to encourage it?
Students should always be encouraged to follow their passion. Every student should realize what he/she wants to do in life and parents should back them up by providing proper guidance and motivation. Parents should realize the strength of their children and encourage them to follow their dreams. The world would not have Sachin Tendulkar if his parents forced him to pursue studies instead of cricket.

With the advent of technology, the increasing use of social media and gadgets is a serious issue with students these days. Do you view this as a problem? If yes, how can teachers/parents mitigate this?
The era of smart gadgets has affected the natural learning process. The over dependency on gadgets can be avoided if kids get to know more from their surroundings. Here are some ideas which could work:
-
- Apartments or colonies should organize sports tournaments for kids.
- Family trips should be conducted at least once a year.
- Apartments or colonies may organize plantation of trees and give the responsibility of one tree to every kid. In this way, every kid has to spend some time with the tree he/she has been allotted
- Painting, singing, dance competitions can be organized.
-
What would be your message to a student who is yet to decide his/her career?
Try to understand your strength and weakness. Do not follow a successful trend just because your friends are doing it. Seek guidance from your elders and try to reach a point of clarity about yourself. Finally, never fear to take the first step and fail.
